Understanding water temperature in the UK will help you prepare for your swims throughout the year.

There is no scientific guideline that specify the water temperatures considered safe for swimming. Open water swimming has benefits and risks regardless of water temperature. The key is to be equipped with the right information and skills to maintain safety for yourself and those around you.

Swimming in cold water is all down to personal preference and is at each individual’s assessment of risk.

NOWCA’s water temperature guide illustrates the most common temperature bands and provides you with safety advice.
